Most articles about online consignment stop at \"declutter your closet and make money.\" That's the fun part. It's also the part that leaves people quietly disappointed six weeks later when the payout lands and it's $38.

So this one goes the other direction. No inspiration, no sustainability sermon — just the arithmetic. What comes in, what gets taken out, what's actually left, and at what point this stops being a hobby and starts being a business with a P&L.

Rule one: gross revenue is a vanity number

Every income screenshot you've seen on YouTube or Instagram is gross. The gap between gross and take-home is where most sellers' expectations die.

One full-time solo reseller broke her year down publicly: about $62,000 in gross Poshmark sales, roughly $12,400 lost to the 20% platform commission, leaving about $49,500 hitting the bank. The fee stack, itemized

Run it on a real item. A vintage Levi's denim jacket listed at $45: the platform keeps about $9, you net $36 — and that's before you subtract what you paid for the jacket (CLOSO).

Across platforms the spread matters more than sellers expect. eBay runs roughly 12.9% plus $0.30 with average sale prices of $25–$75, while Poshmark's flat-ish 20% pairs with average sale prices of $20–$50 (Voolist). Managed luxury consignment sits at the opposite extreme, where commissions can reach 30–70% of the sale price — you're buying total convenience and authentication, and paying retail prices for it (Verify Luxe).

The three tiers, and the honest hours

The most useful framing I've seen breaks sellers into tiers by tenure, and pairs every income figure with a weekly hour count. That second column is the one people skip.

Two things jump out. First, net is consistently about half of gross at every tier — the ratio doesn't improve much with scale, because as volume rises so does cost of goods, supplies, and software. Second, that professional tier is a 25–45 hour week. It is a job.

Independent estimates land in the same neighborhood: casual hobby selling at $200–$800/month, committed part-time at $1,000–$3,500, and full-time businesses at $4,000–$15,000+ (Voolist). Sellers who survive past their first twelve months typically run gross margins of 40–60% (CLOSO).

Where the real money is made: per-item profit

Volume gets attention. Per-item profit pays rent.

The solo full-timer above calculated her average profit per item at about $18.90 and considered it a good number (Honest Full Time Solo Reselling Numbers). At the top end, one husband-and-wife team specializing narrowly in shoes reported $218,000 in 2021 sales and more than $775,000 cumulative since 2017, averaging roughly 4x their cost per pair after fees and shipping, on 2,200 active listings and around 500 sales a month (Business Insider).

Notice what separates them: specialization and a 4x multiple, not hustle. Which points at the actual lever.

The advice consignment veterans keep repeating

Interestingly, the best guidance comes not from online resellers but from brick-and-mortar consignment owners with decades of intake data. It transfers directly.

Be pickier, not busier. A shop owner drowning in volume was told to stop chasing more inventory and instead raise the average price per item sold — by being more selective and attracting customers who pay more for better quality (Auntie Kate). Fifty $12 items and ten $60 items produce similar revenue and wildly different labor.

Let data pick your inventory, not your taste. Veteran operators are blunt about this: be selective, and let the data teach you how, not your personal opinion (20 Hard Learned Lessons). The bag sat by the door for two months.

There's also no upfront cost, which is the part people miss. I didn't pay to list, didn't pay for shipping supplies, didn't pay for promoted placement. If something didn't sell, I lost nothing but the wait. The shop only earns when I earn, which means they're motivated to price my things to actually move.

Who should still sell it themselves

I'm not going to tell you consignment always wins.

If you have two or three items, especially something high-value and easy to describe, list them yourself. You'll keep more and the hassle is contained.

If you genuinely enjoy the process — some people do, the photography and the pricing and the little rush of a sale notification — keep doing it. That's a real hobby with a real return.

But if you have a full bag or a full closet, and a job, and a life, the calculation flips hard. Volume is exactly where doing it yourself falls apart and where handing it off starts paying.

What I do now

I consign a few times a year. I keep a bag in my closet and add to it whenever something stops earning its space. When it's full, I drop it off. Money arrives later without me thinking about it.
